Q: How does the KitchenAid Design Series differ from the Color of the Year program?
A: The Design Series looks at the product as a whole – how everything comes together, with redesigned bowls, hub covers, trim bands and knobs. Whereas the KitchenAid Color of the Year program is really about the feeling behind one shade, focusing on the emotional side of color.
 
Q: What is your team’s role in bringing the Design Series Stand Mixer to life?
A: Our Color, Material and Finish team leads the Design Series work, partnering closely with our industrial designers and graphic designers to help bring the final product to life. It’s a very collaborative process grounded in trend insights, shaping the overall visual direction, and ensuring every detail comes together in a way that feels thoughtful and cohesive. 

Q: Can you walk me through the design journey of Luminaire—from inspiration to the final product?
A: It started with building on the success we saw with Evergreen and asking where we could push the design next. We kept coming back to the idea of a glass bowl which hadn’t been touched in more than a decade, so it felt like a real opportunity. At the same time, Artisan Plus was launching with a built-in light, which sparked the idea of exploring how light moves through the bowl. From there, everything came together around that concept – color, pattern and detailing – especially on the bowl itself, with a lot of focus on getting the reflection and refraction of light just right. 

Q: What was the core inspiration behind Luminaire, and what trends influenced its direction?
A: At the core, the inspiration came from a broader cultural shift toward connection – people wanting to gather and create meaningful moments in a way that feels more personal, joyful and not overly perfect. We leaned into the idea of eclecticism, where a table is filled with different pieces that each carry their own memories and stories. That blend of connection, nostalgia and delight really comes through in the design – from the bowl feeling like a piece you might have in your china cabinet to the contrast of the smooth, reflective hub cover. Even the graphics and font were chosen to reflect the same balance – traditional and decorative, blended with a modern feel. 

Q: Luminaire is a contrast from the previous Design Series, Evergreen. Why did now feel like the right moment for this shift?
A: For this year’s Design Series, we wanted to explore something lighter, both in tone and overall feeling. Evergreen leaned richer and more grounded, while Luminaire brings in softer color and transparency with the hardened glass bowl and more reflective elements. We’re always pushing ourselves to evolve –  celebrating what we’ve done, but making sure we’re creating something new. It felt like a natural progression for the series, while still offering something distinctly different. 

Q: What feeling do you hope people have when they see Luminaire?
A: A sense of delight and discovery. It feels classic at first, but the more time you spend with it, the more details you notice — the texture, the glass, the small design moments throughout. It’s meant to feel approachable, but also a little unexpected.

Q: Can you walk us through the vision and design considerations behind the glass bowl?
A: The bowl was a big focus. We wanted it to feel just as functional as it is beautiful. We were inspired by traditional pieces like vintage china, cut crystal and French influences, and explored a wide range of how decorative we could go. There were many iterations around the fluting, the depth and how the pattern interacts with the glass, as we worked to find the right balance between decorative and modern. 

Q: Were there any new techniques or craftsmanship approaches required to bring the hardened glass bowl to life? 
A: Yes, working with glass introduced a new set of considerations, especially since it’s a more limiting material and something we hadn’t worked with in a while. To really understand its capabilities, a member of our team spent time with our glass supplier in Italy to learn the process first-hand. That experience was key in helping us bring the Luminaire vision to life in a way that still met both our design and performance goals.

Q: What was the most challenging part of developing Luminaire?
A: One of the biggest challenges was working within the new Stand Mixer framework, since this was our first time creating a Design Series for Artisan Plus. Even the small details, like developing the right color for the knobs, required a new approach because of the materials. Rethinking the handle placement on the glass bowl was another challenge to unlock. We ended up moving it up on the bowl which gave us more space to bring the detailing to life and allowed us to introduce hardened glass. It took a lot of refinement to get the proportions and durability right, while still achieving a look that feels elevated, approachable and timeless. At the same time, we pushed ourselves to be more intentional in the other smaller areas of the mixer, like the hub cover and trim band, adding subtle details that aren’t immediately obvious but are meant to be discovered over time.

Q: How would you describe Luminaire’s color and finish, and how does it differ from other blues in the KitchenAid portfolio?
A: Blue Peppercorn is a classic French blue with a slight red undertone, which gives it warmth. We paired it with a textured, crinkle finish to add depth. From a distance it reads more matte, but up close you can really feel it. It’s familiar, but between the color, finish and pairing with the other elements it feels more elevated.

Q: Were there any new techniques, materials, or processes explored to bring the color to life?
A: We explored the color with and without a textured finish, and without it, it fell a bit flat, almost gray. The texture really brought it to life, giving it more dimension and helping it feel richer and more dynamic.

Q: What colors does Blue Peppercorn pair especially well with in the KitchenAid portfolio?
A: Blue Peppercorn pairs beautifully with neutral tones across the KitchenAid portfolio: Porcelain White, Milkshake, Oat, Cardamom, and Juniper. The blue is balanced enough that it also complements metallics like Medallion Silver and Contour Silver – enhanced by the mixer’s polished touchpoints for a cohesive, elevated look.

Q: What makes Luminaire so unique to other KitchenAid Stand Mixers? 
A: Luminaire stands out through its distinctive use of light as a core design element — how it moves through the glass and plays against the detailing creating a dynamic visual experience. This was complemented by a strong focus on craftmanship, from the fluted glass bowl to the polished hub cover and thoughtfully designed trim band. Each detail contributes to a layered aesthetic that feels both timeless and modern, blending the iconic design with a fresh, elevated look.
